The Rialto Police K-9 Unit

The Rialto Police Department is located some 60 miles east of Los Angeles in the southern portion of San Bernardino County. Rialto has a population of approximately 100,000, with the land use being half commercial and half residential. The city has a major train depot and a large tank farm that stores the majority of fuel for three major airports: Los Angeles International, Ontario International, and Lancaster Airport. Several medium-size cities surround Rialto: Fontana, San Bernardino, Colton, and Riverside. Rialto is adjacent to three major freeways and the department handles an average of 300 calls for service per day.

Vanderbilt University’s K-9 Unit

Vanderbilt is a privately operated university located in Nashville, Tennessee. Founded in 1873 with a $1 million grant from Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, the liberal arts college includes 10 professional schools and a large medical center. Located just west of the downtown area, the campus encompasses 229 buildings on 330 acres and employs approximately 23,000 people. Student enrollment is 12,000–12,500 individuals. Because of the medical center and various public events, on any given day 55,000–60,000 people may be on campus.

The Netherlands’ National Police Agency

The Koninklijke Nederlandse Politiehond Vereniging (KNPV), translated as the Royal Netherlands Police Dog Association, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2007, making it one of the oldest police working dog associations in the world. Many Dutch police agencies have experienced the use of police dogs during those years. Today, every police department in the Netherlands has its own K-9 unit of patrol dogs, and some have dogs trained in special disciplines. Alongside the K-9 units of those regional police departments exists a special K-9 unit. In the small town of Nunspeet, hidden in the forests in central Holland, the K-9 Unit of the Korps landelijke politiediensten (KLPD) or Netherlands’ National Police Agency trains all Dutch special-discipline police dogs and their handlers.

U.S. Border Patrol Canine Center El Paso’s Puppy Program

At the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP’s) Canine Center El Paso (CCEP), we perform selective breeding with proven working dog candidates or, on a case-by-case basis, accept puppy donations from other sources. Donations are accepted with the condition that the donated puppy must pass an arduous schedule of selection tests to determine whether he has the drives necessary to complete the Detection Canine course. Puppies that result from our breeding are scrutinized beginning as early as 6 weeks and given a schedule of tests that determine whether they have the drives to continue in our program.
